Fishing in the Upper Peninsula can best be summed up by:

Testament of A Fisherman:
I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of people are found, which are invariably ugly; because of all the television commercials, cocktail parties, and assorted social posturing I thus escape; because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience; because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I for one don't want to waste the trip; because mercifully there are no telephones on trout waters; because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness; because bourbon out of an old tin cup always tastes better out there; because maybe one day I ! will catch a mermaid; and, finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant -
John Voelker (Robert Traver)

From the eastern boundary of the St. Mary’s River, to the western most city of Ironwood, and from the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula at Copper Harbor, to Menominee where the Menominee River flows into Green Bay, The Upper Peninsula is a Fisherman’s paradise.

The Rapids of the St. Mary’s at Sault Ste. Marie is world renowned for its Atlantic Salmon runs. Stannard Rock in Mid-Lake Superior is the Lake Trout fisherman’s paradise and known over the world and the best place in the U.S. to jig for giant Lakers.

Little Bay de Noc at Gladstone is mentioned in almost every Walleye fishing magazine that you can find and annually a host to several professional Walleye Tournaments.
Brook Trout fishing in the Fox and Big Two-Hearted rivers was made famous by Ernest Hemingway in the “Nick Adams Stories”.

Pacific Salmon fishing from Manistique and Fairport on the Garden Peninsula really heats up in July and the opportunity to fight and land this wild and crazy fish is almost guaranteed.

Northern Pike and Muskie in Munoscong Bay and the St. Mary’s River is excellent as is the Walleye Fishing.
Nearly all of the Inland Lakes of the UP have Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Perch, Bluegill and Black Crappie.

All along the southern shoreline of Lake Superior from Grand Maris to Munising to Marquette and L’Anse the Lake trout fishing is unparalleled as well as Coho and Chinook Salmon, Steelhead and Brown Trout.
Big Reef, 20 miles north of Munising is outstanding for Lake Trout. Other great areas for Lake Trout are Keweenaw Bay, Copper Harbor, Isle Royale, Ontonagon, Black River Harbor.

Smallmouth Bass are found in many of the inland lakes but the largest populations and largest fish are found in Lake Michigan in Little and Big Bay’s de Noc and in the Menominee River which runs from Iron Mountain to Menominee.
Steelhead runs in the fall and spring in the rivers at Marquette is a real hoot. The Carp, Chocolay, and Dead rivers get sizable runs of these beautiful and hard fishing fish.

Brook Trout Fishing in the small cold water streams and rivers is found all over the Upper Peninsula. Whether you are a fly-fishing aficionado or a spin caster this great little fish is one of the most palatable and fun to catch creatures you will find.
These streams and rivers also abound with Rainbows and Brown Trout.
